My Top Six Things To Do In Mauritius

If you are planning on visiting the beautiful island of Mauritius, then there are a few places you must see and things you must do! From picturesque boat trips around the island, to visiting the iconic Seven Coloured Earths, or feasting on Mauritian delights.

My top six things to see and do in Mauritius:

1) A boat trip around the island for snorkeling and lunch on board, with views across the beautiful ocean.

If you are travelling to this lovely island, the chances are that you are someone who loves the crystal clear blue waters, the beautiful white beaches and everything to do with marine activity (which is why you will love this). I personally love taking a boat trip when visiting an island as it means you can soak up the sun whilst viewing the stunning coastline… plus you often get snorkeling included (and considering Mauritius is on a big coral reef, this is a must!)

Île aux Cerfs is my favourite boat trip, as we spent the day out on a stunning catamaran cruising around the island and seeing the sights. We got to enjoy a healthy, delicious and fresh lunch aboard the boat with panoramic ocean views, plus got the chance to snorkel around some of the islands beautiful coral reefs. After is we had the chance to explore the idyllic island of Île aux Cerfs (which has some of the bluest waters and whitest sands I have seen).

2) Visit a national park – my suggestion would be the Black River Gorges National Park with the famous Black River waterfall, as well as the natural wonder of the Seven Coloured Earths.

Mauritius has some incredible natural landscapes and national parks that really are a must see. Even if you aren’t a hiker, they are great for everyone to go for half a day and enjoy nature at its best.

The Black River Gorges National Park is perfect for that as they offer a variety of day trips…from a few hours to a full day. You can visit the amazing landscapes and picturesque waterfalls…plus some trips even take you to see the iconic Seven Coloured Earths as well!!
It is well worth the trip if you have the time to explore the islands natural beauty.

3) Take a trip to one of the many vibrant Mauritian markets around the island.

Mauritius is a island full of culture and vibrance. From the colours, to the traditions and the food. If you are a big foodie like me, then you must try one of these markets. Whether it is to buy some homemade traditional souvenirs, sample some Mauritian delights or feast on all of their beautiful fresh fruit! One of my favourite things to sample is their traditional pineapple, tamarind and chili dish 😍

4) Visit the giant tortoises that are decades older than any human.

This is something that won’t take more than a few hours out of your day, but is definitely worth a visit. With only a few places in the world where you can find the famous GIANT tortoises, this is something that would be silly to miss.

They can be found at the La Vanille National Park. Book your trip here: https://www.lavanille-naturepark.com/index.php/en/tortoises-67

5) Have a romantic picturesque dinner.

Either on of the island’s beautiful beaches or in one of Mauritius’s stunning restaurants.
Mauritius is known to be a very romantic destination with an array of picturesque views, so they really know how to host special dinner settings. Whether this is via one of the many luxury hotels, set up in a secluded location on the beach with your own private table with candles and water amongst your feet; or taking a trip to one of the picturesque restaurants on the island.

My Favourite is Le Barachois, which is a delicious and idyllic seafood restaurant set upon stilts over the sea, with perfect sunset views! Book a table here: https://www.constancehotels.com/en/news/sprinkled-with-authenticity/

6) Visit one of the islands factories or plantations.

Mauritius is an amazing island that runs off energy created from the vast amounts of natural sugar cane that the island has an abundance of. This sugar cane is one of their biggest exports and helps supply the beautiful island with a steady income.

Along with this, the island has other products that it is famous for and export around the world…these are tea and rum. If you have time then I would definitely recommend visiting either an island rum factory or tea plantation.

I am a big lover of all kinds of tea so seeing how it is made was fascinating for me (so if you love it too then this is another activity worth doing if you have time when visiting Mauritius).

There are lots of lovely things you can do in Mauritius, but if you only have time to do a a few local activities, them look at doing some of my recommendations above 🙂
